APRIL 24, 2019 HIGHLIGHTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dear 2019 CA COLLAB Attendees-


What a fabulous second day!  Dr. J. Luke Wood kicked us off for a day of thought-provoking and important conversations! The Advisors of Color panel and Student Experience Panel followed up with equally valuable insights. In addition, the concurrent sessions were powerful! Thanks to all our presenters! 


This is the schedule for Wednesday, April 24th:

  • 8:00-10:00 Registration

  • 8:00-9:00 Continental Breakfast (Note: If you need a more substantial hot breakfast, consider a short car ride to breakfast joints in Shelter Island, Point Loma, or Liberty Station.) 

  • 9:00-10:00 Opening Keynote: Dr. Joseph J. Johnson - Dr. Johnson is SDSU's Interim Provost and Senior Vice President. He is always so inspiration! This is a not-to-be-missed session. Please see his bio which is attached

  • 10:00-10:15 BREAK

  • 10:15-11:05 Concurrent Session #5

  • 11:15-12:05 Concurrent Session #6

  • 12:05-12:20 BREAK

  • 12:20-1:45 Lunch and Keynote Speaker: Dr. Annebelle Nery. Dr. Nery has an amazing story to share. In addition, you will want to hear about all the great work that she's done. Her bio is attached.

  • 1:45-2:45 Closing Plenary: Tri-System Updates (Panelists: Dr. April Grommo, Rhonda Mohr, and Han Mi Yoon-Wu) Hear updates from the CCC, CSU, and UC Office of the Chancellor/President. See their bios attached

  • 2:45-3:00 Closing Remarks

  • 3:00-5:00 SIG Meetings - Convene, converse, and collaborate around topics of interest. 

Some announcements:

  • For lunch, we're serving roasted chicken breast. The vegetarian option is roasted corn latkes. If you indicated that you need a special meal, please see registration for your meal ticket. 

  • Make sure to fill up on coffee/tea during the continental breakfast and lunch. The hotel will be providing water throughout the meeting spaces all day long. 

  • Wifi Code: Our wifi network is “konakaiguest” - no password necessary. There is an alternate wifi network in the main building which can be found under “konakaimeeting” - again, no password necessary.

  • Enjoy San Diego and the water views!! We made sure to provide you with perfect sunny, cool weather! (You're welcome!) Dress is casual and comfortable!

  • Parking is $10 per day - Just mention that you're with CA COLLAB. That stated, you can also find parking on the street.

  • Come hang out at the registration area - Make buttons. Play games. Put together our CA puzzle.

APRIL 23, 2019 HIGHLIGHTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dear 2019 CA COLLAB Attendees-


What a great first day! We had some great SIG meetings and are looking forward to more SIG meetings on Wednesday afternoons. We also had great fun meeting folks during registration! Remember to come by the registration table to pick up your badge, swag, meal tickets, buttons, etc. We enjoyed seeing folks getting creative at the button-making table and puzzles/games tables! Please come by and collaborate, converse, and convene!


Some highlights:

  • On Tuesday, April 23, our day will start with a Continental Breakfast from 8-9am in the ballroom area by the registration tables. (Note: If you need a more substantial hot breakfast, consider a short car ride to breakfast joints in Shelter Island, Point Loma, or Liberty Station.) 

  • From 9:00-10:00am, Dr. J. Luke Wood will kick off our conference with the opening keynote. We are thrilled to have Dr. Wood at our conference. Dr. Wood is a mover and shaker for advancing the work of people of color and for strengthening the pipeline between community colleges and universities. His bio is attached. What a treat to have him with us!

  • Following Dr. Wood's keynote from 10:00-10:50am, we'll be hosting a panel about "Advisors/Counselors of Color." Diversity and equity remain at the core of our work; come listen to advisors/counselors as they discuss insights about power, perspective, and privilege. See attached for panelists' bios. 

  • At lunch from 12:20-1:30pm, we will host a "Student Experience Panel." Come learn about the perspectives of local San Diego students from the CCC, CSU, and UC. The focus will be on diversity and non-traditional student experiences. See attached for panelists' bios.

  • We will host four fantastic concurrent sessions. Topics range from homelessness, Instagram, International Students, and much more! Some new additions this year include Self-Care Workshops, Sharing Circles, and Unconference! We have so many options for you! 

  • From 4:30-6:30pm, we are hosting a SMORES reception at the private beach area. There will also be a No-Host Bar!! Come early and grab cabana seats! The bonfire pits are calling your name! Come join us on the sand, dip your feet in the water, and eat some yummy smores! FUN! FUN! FUN!
